Understanding QR Codes

QR stands for "quick response". A QR code is a square grid of light and dark squares called modules, and that grid is simply a visual way of writing down a short piece of data — usually a link, some text or a set of connection details.

How QR codes work

The data you enter is converted into bits, wrapped with error-correction data and laid out across the grid. The three large squares in the corners are finder patterns: they tell a scanner where the code is and how it is rotated, which is why a QR code still reads upside down or at an angle. Error correction adds redundancy, so a code can still be decoded when part of it is scratched, blurred or covered — Low keeps the code small, while High tolerates more damage at the cost of a denser pattern.

What information can a QR code store?

Anything that can be written as text: a URL, a plain message, a mailto: link with a subject and body, a tel: number, or a Wi-Fi string containing the network name, security type and password. Capacity depends on the character set and the error correction level, and roughly a few thousand characters is the practical ceiling. Long content produces a very dense code, so shorter data scans faster and prints smaller.

Static vs dynamic QR codes

A static QR code holds the data itself. Once printed, the content cannot change — but it also has no dependency on any service staying online. A dynamic QR code stores a short redirect link owned by a provider, so the destination can be edited later and scans can be counted, at the cost of relying on that provider. Remember that a printed QR code is readable by anyone who can see it, so treat a Wi-Fi or private-link code the same way you would treat the password itself.
