Understanding Image Resizing

An image resizer changes the pixel dimensions of a picture — its width and height — and lets you save the result in the format you need. The original file on your device stays untouched; the tool creates a new image at the size you asked for.

Image dimensions vs file size

Dimensions are measured in pixels, such as 1920 × 1080. File size is measured in bytes, KB or MB. Reducing dimensions often reduces file size because there are fewer pixels to store, but the outcome also depends on the output format, the content of the image and the encoding settings. A resized image can sometimes end up larger than the original — for example a small JPG re-saved as PNG. JPG vs PNG vs WebP

Maintain aspect ratio

The aspect ratio is the relationship between width and height. Keeping it locked means one value is calculated from the other, so faces, text and shapes keep their proportions instead of looking stretched or squashed. Turn the toggle off only when you deliberately need exact dimensions and accept possible distortion. When a preset has a different shape from your image, the tool fits the image inside the preset rather than silently distorting it.

How does image resizing work?

Your browser decodes the picture into pixels, then redraws it onto a canvas at the target width and height using smooth interpolation. When you shrink an image, neighbouring pixels are averaged into fewer pixels, so very fine detail is discarded. When you enlarge it, existing pixels are interpolated — no new detail can be invented. The canvas is finally encoded into JPG, PNG or WebP.

Fit vs exact dimensions

Fit inside scales the whole image so it sits within the width and height you entered, keeping the original proportions — one side may end up smaller than the number you typed. Exact size forces both values, which guarantees the dimensions but can stretch or squash the picture when the shapes do not match. Use Fit for photos and Exact only when a form or upload demands precise pixel values.
