Aadhaar is the 12-digit identity number issued to residents of India by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). UIDAI runs every Aadhaar service — enrolment, updates, downloads and card orders. Many of these can now be completed online from home through UIDAI's official portals, while some, such as changing your registered mobile number or updating biometrics, still need a visit to an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre or Aadhaar Seva Kendra. This page explains, in plain language, which route applies to your situation and links you straight to the official service.

Download e-Aadhaar
e-Aadhaar is the digitally signed electronic copy of your Aadhaar letter, issued by UIDAI as a password-protected PDF. It carries the same details as the printed letter and is accepted as valid Aadhaar.
You download it from the official MyAadhaar portal. Sign in with your Aadhaar number and the OTP sent to the mobile number registered with your Aadhaar, then choose the download option — including the masked version if you prefer not to display the full number. The portal shows the password format for opening the PDF.

Aadhaar details are corrected or updated through UIDAI only. Which route you use depends on the field you are changing — not everything can be done online.
Online update (MyAadhaar portal)
Signing in with your registered mobile number and an OTP, the MyAadhaar portal generally supports demographic updates such as address, along with the document update facility UIDAI provides for re-verifying your existing identity and address proofs. You upload a scanned copy of a valid supporting document, and UIDAI verifies it before the change is applied.
Centre-based update
Changes to your name, date of birth, gender, mobile number, email or biometrics are normally handled in person at an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre or Aadhaar Seva Kendra, where an operator verifies your original documents and captures biometrics. Some of these updates are also limited in how many times they may be made.
Which fields are available online, the accepted documents and the charges are all decided by UIDAI and change from time to time. Check the current requirements on the UIDAI website before you begin.
Update AadhaarAadhaar Mobile Number Update
Adding or changing the mobile number linked with your Aadhaar cannot be completed online. UIDAI requires you to visit an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre or Aadhaar Seva Kendra in person, because the request is authenticated with your biometrics. A small service charge set by UIDAI applies at the centre.
This matters because almost every online Aadhaar service — e-Aadhaar download, address update, PVC card order — relies on an OTP sent to your registered number. If you no longer have access to it, the centre visit is the first step. You do not need an original document for the mobile number update itself, but carry your Aadhaar details and confirm the current requirement on the UIDAI website first.
Order Aadhaar PVC Card
The Aadhaar PVC Card is a printed, wallet-sized plastic Aadhaar card issued by UIDAI. It carries security features such as a hologram, a secure QR code, a ghost image and micro-text, and is more durable than a paper Aadhaar letter.
You order it through the official MyAadhaar portal after OTP verification. A nominal fee, inclusive of postage, is payable online; UIDAI displays the current amount on the portal at the time of ordering, so check it there rather than relying on figures quoted elsewhere. The card is dispatched by post to the address recorded in your Aadhaar.
Order Aadhaar PVC CardCheck Aadhaar Enrolment or Update Status
After a fresh enrolment or an update request, UIDAI gives you an acknowledgement slip with a reference — an enrolment ID (EID) for new enrolments, or an update request number (URN) or service request number for updates. Use that reference on the official MyAadhaar portal to see whether the request is still being processed, has been approved or needs further action.
Keep the acknowledgement slip until the change is reflected in your Aadhaar.

Aadhaar Seva Kendras are UIDAI-run centres for enrolment, biometric updates, mobile number updates and other in-person services. Booking a slot in advance through UIDAI's official appointment system saves waiting time and confirms that the service you need is offered at that centre.
Choose your city, the service required and a convenient time on the official portal, and carry the original documents listed there. ToolBandhu does not book appointments and does not collect any appointment details.
Book Aadhaar AppointmentFind an Aadhaar Enrolment / Update Centre
Only centres authorised by UIDAI can enrol you or change your Aadhaar record. UIDAI publishes an official locator on its website where you can search by state, district, postal code or centre name, and the appointment portal also lists nearby Aadhaar Seva Kendras.
Avoid third-party directories and agents advertising Aadhaar services — they are not verified, and UIDAI does not authorise anyone to collect your Aadhaar details on its behalf.
Aadhaar Security and Privacy
UIDAI offers several features that let you control how your Aadhaar is shared and used. Availability and exact behaviour can change, so read the description on the UIDAI portal before relying on any of them.
- Masked Aadhaar: an e-Aadhaar download in which the first eight digits are hidden and only the last four are shown. It reduces how much of the number you disclose, but the rest of your details remain visible.
- Virtual ID (VID): a temporary, revocable 16-digit number you can generate and use in place of your Aadhaar number where VID is accepted, so you need not share the number itself.
- Authentication history: a record on the UIDAI portal of recent authentications performed against your Aadhaar, which helps you spot activity you do not recognise.
- Biometric lock / unlock: lets you lock your biometrics so they cannot be used for authentication until you temporarily or permanently unlock them.
- Aadhaar lock / unlock: where offered, lets you lock the Aadhaar number itself, after which authentication must be done using your VID instead.
These features limit misuse; they are not a guarantee against it. Combine them with basic caution: never share an Aadhaar OTP with another person, never enter Aadhaar information on an unofficial website, check the domain in the address bar before typing anything sensitive, and use only official UIDAI websites for Aadhaar services.
Aadhaar Documents and Requirements
There is no single document list that covers every Aadhaar service. What you need depends on what you are doing — a first-time enrolment, an address change, a name correction or a document re-verification each call for different proofs, and the rules differ for children and for certain categories of resident.
Broadly, UIDAI asks for proof of identity, proof of address, proof of date of birth or proof of relationship depending on the service, and it publishes an official list of documents accepted in each category. That list is revised from time to time.
Check UIDAI's latest accepted-document list for your specific service before uploading anything online or visiting a centre, and carry the originals when you go in person.
